Miles Missiles: A question VERY few believers ever approach is how do we know the Bible is authoritative? When I was rebelling against the Lord back in the 70s, the word I hated most to hear was scripture. I couldnt get anyone to define what they meant by that, other than some circular reasoning and verses from the Bible that supposedly confirmed inerrancy ... but how do we know what constitutes The Bible? Let me tell you what Ive found within The Bible that has instructed me on this subject. This will not be what you are expecting. 1./ The Bible claims that everyone knows by the witness of nature that there is a God and that that God is supremely powerful and also good, as in moral. The heavens declare the Glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. THEIR VOICE GOES OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH. THERE IS NO LANGUAGE AND THERE IS NO SPEECH WHERE THEIR VOICE IS NOT HEARD. Paul, commenting on this scripture, (Psalm 19:1-3), says Gods invisible qualities - His eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Romans 1:20 In the book of John, almost every chapter says something like:The True Light that gives light to every man, was coming into the world. In other words, we all know the truth, but not all of us have the courage to face what we know down deep ... by down deep, I mean to say, you are a spirit, you have a soul, (mind), and you live in a body. Your natural mind makes so much noise that you often dont hear your real self - your spirit. And God is Spirit, and He speaks to your spirit. So, when Im met with these passages, I have to bow or rebel. I have to say that if I dont know, its because I dont want to know ... or this whole Bible is a crock. And when I get still, I believe I know that I am a spirit, and that there is a Moral Sovereign who loves me and is speaking to me quietly all the time. And nature, and this book that tells me nature is talking to me, and my own soul, greatly energized by this mere book, The Bible, tells me I am right. 2./ But I am a left brained scientist type guy and I want PROOF ON MY TERMS! And there is some interesting history on how which books came to be canonized, and the Golden Lampstand in the Tabernacle has 66 parts to it ... like the 66 books in the Bible ... but if you dont ALREADY BELIEVE, none of these things will convince you. But what part of you is insisting on such proof? The deceiver Joseph Smith claimed he was given golden plates written by God, (which he could not produce of course), from which he got The Book of Mormon. But would the Classy Sovereign of the universe do something like that? The conservative Islamists insist that the Koran be only in Arabic and always have the same pagination, and they kill anyone who destroys a copy of it ... what does that tell your heart about Islam? Its idolatry to worship any book, even the Bible - its only paper. But the flesh of men wants to worship a book, or their mind and reasoning ... and how do I know The Bible is uniquely the inspiried Word of God? It may sound like circular reasoning, but Ive met the Author, so I know. I know He is so efficient and in charge of every grain of sand, and that if Im honest, He will be competent and loving enough to get the Truth to me. And I so wish I could sit down with you for a couple of hours and pour out to you what Hes poured out to me - from The Bible, but also in dreams and visions and prophetic encounters, and the one time He let me see Him ... He is not an insecure, left brained, scientist who is fawning for my attention and yours. He has declared Himself clearly to your conscience, (spirit). Jesus said wild stuff like, You dont believe because youre not my sheep. (John 10:26) Wow. He says His own will come to Him. 3./ When you read, say, the gospel of John and there you find page after page of monologues and dialogues that would be IMPOSSIBLE for a natural man to accurately recall after any amount of time, let alone the decades that were involved before they were written down. So, the Bible is a strangely beautiful crock of stuff ... or, it is the Story that the Personal AND Sovereign God of the Universe wanted recorded for me and you to read ... though really, this book reads us more than we read it. And, if you dont believe this, maybe youre not one of His sheep?
