Milkha Singh won gold at the Cardiff Asian Games in 400 m in 1958 with a time of 46.6 seconds which made him the first gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games from India after independence. In 1960, at the Rome Olympics, Milkha Singh finished fourth in the 400 m race missing out on a medal in a photo-finish. In the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games, Milkha Singh won gold in the 400 m and in the 4 x 400 m relay.
