Mini rant for the evening It irks me when top lifters (or even just very good lifters) claim they arent genetically gifted, and then belittle people who havent achieved as much. If you are a 600+ squatter or deadlifter or a 400+ bencher, you got a good genetic draw. Maybe not the best conceivable, but at least a couple standard deviations from the norm. So sure, be proud of how hard you work, but if someone isnt as strong as you, it doesnt mean they dont work just as hard or dont know just as much about lifting as you. Ive had training partners who were slackers, Ive had some that train just as hard as I do, and Ive had some that absolutely train harder than I do. Im still the strongest of them. Furthermore, Ill be the first to admit that I was dealt a good hand for it. In spite of what Ive accomplished, Im not the strongest person in my family, and I have several close relatives that Im 100% positive would out-lift me if they trained for powerlifting. I come from a family of absolute monsters, and if I denied that my genetic draw played a role in my success, Id be lying to myself and everyone else. And its not that I dont train hard (I do), and its not that I dont take the time to read and write and learn the physiological mechanisms behind getting stronger (I do). Those things certainly contribute. But at the end of the day, you have to play the hand you were dealt. If youve accomplished a lot, and want to chalk it up solely to hard work and a good lifestyle, youre kidding yourself and insulting everyone else who wasnt as fortunate.
