Minimum wage earners want an increase to 15.00 dollars/hour. Heres - TopicsExpress

Minimum wage earners want an increase to 15.00 dollars/hour. Heres my perspective. In 1985 I flipped hamburgers at McDonalds for 3.25/hour. Thats around 6760 dollars/year for a full time worker. In 1985 the average teacher salary was 23,600. If minimum wage increases by 4.6 times to 15.00 dollars/hour then that puts a minimum wage earner at 31,096/year. An equivalent increase in teaching salaries would put the teaching field average at 4.6 times 23,600 or 108,560 dollars. If salaries were all increased by the same percentage Id be all for minimum wage increase, but the fact is, teaching salaries have only increased by about 1.9 times to an average of 47,000/year. Id be happy with a comparable minimum wage of 1.9 times 3.25/hour or 6.17/hour. Minimum wage increase can only push costs onto consumers or cause a reduction minimum wage jobs.
