Miss Bertha M Terry Voluntary Aid Detachment 1914-18 (and taken from the QARNNS and VAD Archive). The VADs were formed in 1909 to provide Medical Assistance in the time of war. They bought their own uniform and worked for a minimal sum with a small allowance to upkeep their uniform. By 1939 there were some 5,000 VADs Royal Navy. The second photo is Miss Helen Vlasto VAD who served at Haslar on D-Day and early in the war acted as General Degaulles interpreter. The third Photo is Miss Bearice French who served at Haslar on D-Day and also played a part in Operation Magic Carpet 1945 the greatest transfer of Prisoners of War (UK - American-Canadian-Australian) from the Far East to Australia and North America on-board HMS Glory.
