Miss Liberty... Pretty sure she is powered by a nuclear reactor. I personally if at all possible like to work with canines Off Lead to imprint behavior. That is not always an option. I like to create a bond & set the ground rules by getting the canine to offer behavior. work the leash in on neutral ground if possible as opposed to the leash being a device of correction. Goal is that the leash is not a vessel of conflict. PLUS, when a canine CHOOSES us, then we know we are connected. Same with positioning. We do not use verbal until we teach the muscle memory & position. Once the canine offers a sit, down, stand, heel.... then we mark it verbally. We use a lot of hand cues.
