Miss Telma Hopkins (Dawn of Tony Orlando & Dawn) was born on this day in 1948. Her career began in Detroit Michigan as a background singer having worked with legendary acts like The Four Tops and Marvin Gaye. She also sang back up for Isaac Hayes and can be heard famously exclaiming Shut your mouth! on Hayes hit song Theme From Shaft. As the story goes Tony Orlando had recorded his hit Candida in the late 1970 with session musicians under the name of Dawn. Now he needed the real thing if he were to go on stage & so he recruited Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson & thats how Tony Orlando & Dawn came to be. Hopkins is an actress as well having appeared in TV sitcoms including Bosom Buddies, Getting By and Half & Half. Hopkins is best known for her roles as Adelaide Addy Wilson on Gimme a Break! from 1984 to 87, and as Rachel Crawford on Family Matters from 1989 to 1998.
