Mission As an integral part of the School of Humanities of the Ateneo de Manila University, a Filipino Catholic Jesuit University, the Theology Department brings to bear the living Catholic theological tradition on the total formation of the Ateneo students, the goals of which are academic excellence, social responsibility, spiritual maturity, and cultural rootedness. This is pursued through systematic reflection—critical, contemporary, and inculturated, on human life as illumined by Christian Faith and its implications for personal and social commitments. As the Ateneo de Manila expands its role in a rapidly changing Philippine society within an emerging global world, the Theology Department has a distinctive contribution to make as a center of theological study and reflection. In its teaching, research and publication, it pursues excellence in higher theological education in the Philippines and in South East Asia. Description Theology, an integral part of Jesuit Education, with its living intellectual and moral/spiritual tradition and its truly Catholic/Christian orientation, aims to foster the total formation of Ateneo students. While the Catholic and Jesuit education permeates the whole University, the specific task of theology is to bring this tradition into an explicit, systematic and critical study in our Filipino context. This involves a serious effort at creating, articulating and exercising a critically grounded, inculturated program that engages the intra-inter and metapersonal contexts of today’s Ateneo students leading towards a transformation of consciousness translated in a committed Christian/Catholic faith life. As a constitutive part of the humanistic program, Theology infuses the academic formation of students with a firmly articulated Catholic/Christian vision.
