Mister Bojangles Some days we just need a little Sammy. Deserve a little Sammy. Sit back and relax. Feel the man as he lives this song as only he can. He became the song. It is about him. It is about me. It is about you. Sometimes we are the one listening to someone’s story. Other times we are happy to be heard as we speak of our journey. Just happy to share the highs and the lows. Sammy Davis was Mister Bojangles. I have the great privilege of seeing him perform at Caesar’s Palace in the 80s. A double bill. Sammy Davis, Jr, and Bill Cosby. Wow. I was right there and knew at the time it was witnessing two greats. Great talents. Great men. Loved how much they enjoyed each other and celebrated the gifts each had to share with that night and forever. A few weeks later, I wrote Sammy Davis a letter. A thank you….a thank you for being him. Realized how much he meant to me over the years. As a kid, he was one of those guys in movies and on shows that always caught my eye. Rat Pack. Driving a getaway garbage truck. Singing anything. Joking about himself and life. He was Sammy Davis. The Sammy Davis. So I wrote him a letter to let him know how much he mattered. A part of our lives in ways that we too often take for granted. Wanted to make sure he heard that from me. Did he ever even see the letter? The likelihood is slim. What matters is that I wrote and sent it. It was more about me when it comes right down to it. That is how our letters are…….they are really about us. So enjoy Sammy today. Maybe again tomorrow. You deserve the feel of a man at home with his soul on a stage that is open anytime we choose to hear and feel. Smile and watch him lightly touch down.
