Mithi Senior Civil Judge Mian Fayyaz Rabbani has issued notices to the vice chancellor of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) and the deputy commissioner and the senior superintendent of police in Mithi to explain to the court why the LUMHS team was stopped from treating drought-hit population in Thar. The senior civil judge, who was made a relief inspecting judge by the Sindh High Court early this year following reports of drought and deaths of children in the arid region, issued the notices on Friday on an application filed by the office-bearers of the Mithi District Bar Association, Hamlesh Kumar, Mohan Lal Mantharani and 12 others, including DBA president Bhero Lal, it was learnt on Saturday. The judge has asked the respondents to submit their replies by Monday (Dec 15). The applicants said the respondents should be asked to appear in person in court to explain reasons as to why the LUMHS team, which had arrived in Thar on Dec 11, was asked to leave by the evening the same day without treating patients. They said that serious action should be taken against the respondents and they should be directed to find out causes of the present crisis in Thar.
