Moite Flores, former police inspector and now political commentator in Portugal said: “The only thing proven was that there was no abduction. I have no doubt that the child died”, this has been held, in other groups, as evidence suggesting the parents guilt. --- Well now, apart from this not being in the files, half of this is untrue, and half of it is opinion. As we know, the shelving statement does not discount the abduction scenario at all. The Republics Prosecutor Jose Magalhaes e Menezes wrote, “Within the factual context we could be facing an abduction situation, although all possibilities have always been open, as they continue to be” Indeed, at the same libel trial that Flores made his arrogant statement, Jose Magalhaes e Menezes says he is 50/50 over whether or not the child is dead. Amaral himself admitted in an interview with Focus, that he feels that, had he been allowed to continue in charge of the investigation, he might have reached the conclusion that the McCanns were uninvolved in Madeleine’s disappearance: “Focus – You said that the mother can’t be accused of having done this or that… How far can you deduct? G.A. – As far as we could deduct on the 2nd of October. I believe, and so did my colleagues in the investigation, that if we had continued into the same direction of the investigation, we might eventually have gone further. We might even have reached a point where we dismissed any suspicion concerning the parents. Investigations that only go half the way is what leaves things as they are now. Focus – Are Madeleine McCanns’ parents responsible for their daughter’s death?” G.A. – No. (with thanks to Joana Morais for the translation) That doesn’t sound unequivocal to me, far from it.
