Molby: Neutral fans want to see Reds win the title Kieran Gill spoke to the Anfield penalty king today in the wake of Liverpools Old Trafford triumph Liverpool legend Jan Molby, the man who scored a hat-trick of penalties against Coventry City in 1986 while a six-year-old Steven Gerrard made his Anfield debut in the terraces, believes neutral fans want to see the Reds captain lift the Premier League trophy The Great Dane, who scored 62 goals for Liverpool with 42 of them coming from the spot, thinks Gerrard relaxed after scoring his first two penalties in Liverpools 3-0 win against Manchester United before his third hit the post. But Molby, who won the First Division three times during his 12-year career with Liverpool, said fair-minded football supporters would like to see the Old Trafford hero cap his career with a title. I think if it is Liverpool that win the title then a lot of neutral football fans would be pleased for Steven Gerrard, he said. For football fans, and the fact of Gerrards loyalty to Liverpool, I think theyd be pleased. But still, that gets you nothing because you still have to go win it. The two last away games, 3-0 at Southampton and 3-0 at Man United, have been impressive performances. But Liverpool could win all their games and still not win it, and because of that its in the balance. Molby remains the last player to score three penalties in a match - a record which Gerrard came within centimetres of matching. But the former Denmark international had a theory as to why the England midfielder missed the third. If the one Gerrard missed would have been his first, I think it wouldve went in, he said. He probably just got a little over confident but if youre going to miss a penalty, you may as well miss the one where it doesnt matter. Hell be disappointed because the opportunity to write yourself into the history books doesnt come along too often. I think if youre a penalty taker, you enjoy the challenge. You dont want to miss any but there is added pressure. Gerrard is kind of built towards becoming a better penalty taker. Hes a great striker of the ball and hes maybe not one of those who might wait for the goalkeeper to make his move. Some wait and go the other way, but he uses his skill of being a great kicker of the ball. When asked if the pressure is different at Old Trafford, he said: Of course it is. I mean Coventry is a whole different thing to Man United, isnt it? Gerrards goal tally went up to 10 for the season, with eight coming from the spot, while striker Luis Suarez remains top with 25. Their goals moved Liverpool into second place in the Premier League, four points adrift of leaders Chelsea with a game in hand, and cemented Brendan Rodgerss side firmly in the title race. When asked if Liverpool had knocked the Red Devils off their perch, Molby said: It may be too early to say that, but Man United have no short-term solutions. Theyve got a real problem and at the moment, Man United and Liverpool are moving in opposite directions. Liverpool look young, fit and hungry whereas half of Man United just look like they have had enough. echo
