Moments in my day: Today as I pulled up to a grocery store a homeless man walked up to my window inches away. The sun was blocking my clear view of his face, so in a low and baritone voice I asked him to back up. I opened the door and he proceeded (before I had even got a clear view of him) to ask for some change. As his face came into view I realized that I and him (Alvin) had met before, as this is how we began our conversations before. I said I know you, and with a surprised and bit fearful look he exclaimed no, weve never met. I insisted that we had and reminded him where and when and even that he used to wear his hair short. And it clicked. He immediately remembered, looked down and looked back at me smiling. Yeah I guess I have been growing it out, and youve lost some weight. I asked his name again and he told me. We talked for a good while. I asked him why he was where he was, and he showed me. His collar bones had been set way off in a boating accident. He said there was nothing they could do, because it might kill him. His eyes were yellow from his liver not working so well and his breath dressed in his choice brand for the day. As we came to the end of our conversation I reach in my pocket to see what change (if any) I had to give, there was a few coins I had, which I gave to him. He thanked me. As we began to step back to walk away I asked him if I could pray for him. He hesitated for a moment but then shrugged his shoulders and said sure, I can always use some. So I did, and said amen. As we were walking away he said here, it was one of the coins I had given him. I asked him if he was sure. He said it my blessing to you to me koolaid. He smiled I smiled, we chuckled, wished each other well with anticipation that we would see each other again some day. I didnt tell him my name today but he remembered from months ago. Good to see a friend.
