Moms Across America March to Label GMOs From Zoe: TELL CONGRESS NOT TO GIVE FAST TRACK AUTHORITY TO THE PRESIDENT! The trade agreements TTP are threatening everything the GMO labeling movement has achieved thus far. These trade deals are negotiated in secret by corporations that are working with the government, not by elected officials. The president should NOT have the power to write a treaty. If congress gives Obama that authority, they will not see a treaty until it comes time to ratify it and they will not be able to make any changes, only vote up or down. If congress grants Obama fast-track trade promotion authority, he will essentially have the power of a king, something our forefathers had the foresight to avoid. These trade agreements need to be brought into the light of day and debated by congress. An example given last night was that states may be coerced into repealing labeling laws that are in place because they don’t want to be sued by companies like Monsanto who could say that the laws are a barrier to trade and causing them to loose money. For example, the EU has passed laws against the import and sale of GMOs that are a barrier to trade for Monsanto, causing them to loose sales. Under these new trade agreements, Monsanto could sue them for losses. The concern is that laws banning GMOs or requiring labeling would be repealed out of fear of being sued. This is corporate coercion! We do still have some democratic rights- congress members are still elected officials and we have to put pressure on them! We need to use the August recess as a time to set up meetings with our congress members and tell them not to give Obama fast track trade promotion authority!
