Great energy, exercise, friends, and joy. When my wife saw the video (see below) she said I cant do that! I explained that half the people in the class were rote beginners, had never done it before. what the video shows is what everyone could do at the END of the 90 minute class. MBemba started with how to hold the sticks and strike the drum, and built up step-by-step from there. So I hope you try it out and see what you think! https://youtube/watch?v=5c9IxsqCDAo Watch our video of our first dun dun dance class! Please pass it along! You will need to bring your own dun dun if you have one. If you do not have one, we can rent you one for $10. If you will need to borrow a dun dun, we strongly recommend you reserve one in advance. You can do this by emailing Matt at [email protected]. You do not need to pre-pay, but you should really reserve a dun dun ahead of time. We only have 10 dun duns to loan out, and they go quickly. ABOUT MBEMBA MBemba Bangoura has traveled throughout the world as a performer and teacher of African drum and dance and is revered worldwide for his high level of mastery. As a native of Guinea, West Africa, MBemba began drumming at a very young age: MBembas classroom teacher asked all the children if any wanted to learn the djembe, and MBemba was the only child to raise his hand. He was seven years old. By the age of 21, he was acclaimed as an accomplished drummer and was invited to play for Ballet Djoliba, the National Ensemble of Guinea, which he played in for 13 years. Since moving to the US in 1992, MBemba has been an integral part of many drum and dance conferences and workshops nationwide, as well as teaching and performing internationally in Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Asia. MBemba has released 3 CDs, and two DVDs. He has taught hundreds of students, many of who are now teachers themselves. In addition, he has personally created choreography and developed repertoire for dozens of dance companies in New York City and abroad. MBemba is one of the foremost ambassadors for Guinean drum and dance today. DESCRIPTION Mbembas classes usually follow this format: 1) holding and positioning the drum 2) how to get/improve tone, slap, bass 3) warmup 4) introduction of todays rhythm (origin, purpose, cultural relevance) 5) accompaniment parts 6) solo technique MBemba or I can tune your djembe, and evaluate whether it needs further care. MBemba can change the skin if need be, with a turnaround time of about 1 week.
