Monday, 7/24/1944: Clear and hot today. Had fairly busy day at the mill. Too hot to do much tonight. Pieced together several short pieces of hose I had around and have a 40’ hose now. Washed the car tonight. Sanatorium dump caught fire tonight and the Leeds and Northampton dept’s fought it for 3 or 4 hours before they could bring it under control. Our apparatus went up from Haydenville, but as there wasn’t any hydrant there they couldn’t do anything except with chemicals. Sam and Donald and Dorothy and Budget went up. Mildred doesn’t feel good, so went to bed early. Only one hen sitting now, but only getting 3 or 4 eggs a day. Three eggs today. Sam bought 25 lbs. scratch feed. Gasoline getting scare again.
