Monday Musings for November 10, 2014 Dear Friends, What a great day yesterday! Consecration Sunday was a wonderful success. Thanks for making it so! We took a moment in worship to recognize our veterans. Several have asked about the video we played. I have attached it for those who would like to see it again. Its the Cadet Glee Club of West Point that sings this stunning rendition of Mansions of the Lord. We finally know who killed Osama bin Laden. Its Robert ONeill, a Navy Seal from Montana. I read with interest the article in this mornings Statesman about who killed Isoroku Yamamoto. Yamamoto was the mastermind of the Pearl Harbor attack. He was killed in 1943 in a daring air battle by either Thomas Lanphier of Boise, Idaho or Rex Barber of Culver, Oregon. It was a turning point in the war. Controversy remains over who actually shot him out of the sky, though as the Statesman article confirms, the preponderance of the evidence points to Rex Barber. One reason I read the article with such interest is that I played Little League baseball against Rex Barber. Rex Barber, Jr. He was a pitcher and a good one. The Culver team was always tough to beat. His dad, Im pretty sure, was their coach. I remember my dad, also a World War II veteran, telling me that Rex Barber was a war hero. The significance didnt register back then as it does now. In 2003, two years after Rex Barbers death, the new bridge between Madras and Redmond (near Culver) spanning the Crooked River Gorge was named for him. It is the Rex T. Barber Veterans Memorial Bridge. There were many who stood when we honored our veterans in worship. Many more are on the list of our service men and women that we print in the bulletin each week. A veteran is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable To My Country for an amount up to and including my life. Thank you veterans. May we never forget the sacrifices they made and still make for us. In Christ, John https://youtube/watch?v=hGoSWn1tHeo
