Monday, November 3 FEAST OF MARTIN DE PORRES, RELIGIOUS Servant and saint Martin de Porres was an interracial child in a time and place—colonial-era Peru—when mixed-race background meant second-class status. Barred from becoming a full member of a religious order, the only route open to Martin was to ask the Dominicans to accept him as a donado, basically a servant. Fortunately the Spirit is not bound by human limitation or prejudice. Martin’s holy life and solidarity with the marginal and the outcast make him a hero and role model to all who seek social and racial justice. Martin is a saint for our own divided society; honor him by honoring people of all backgrounds. TODAY’S READINGS: Philippians 2:1-4; Luke 14:12-14. “Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.” CONTRIBUTORS Alice Camille, Sister Colleen Gibson, S.S.J., Daniel Grippo, Father Larry Janowski, O.F.M., Sister Maxine Kollasch, I.H.M., Jennifer Tomshack, Patrice J.
