Monday and Tuesday, we went to visit a couple of picturesque English villages, Lacock & Castle Comb. (Nick and I took the weekend off from sight-seeing.) Lacock is what we Americans think of when we think of a Medieval village, and Castle Comb (which is NOT actually a castle) is named for the sort of fabric the town used to produce. Both villages date back to the early middle-ages, and are surrounded by utterly beautiful forests filled (in the case of Castle Comb) with ancient walls holding the earth back from the roads. These walls, which are still is use all over the country, were built without a lick of mortar ...amazing. An interesting thing about Castle Comb (pronounced "castle-coom"), is that it was still a feudal village until 1947, when it was sold, and the homes, shops and inns are now under private ownership. Today Nick & I are going to see an actual castle ...then I think I might spend the next few days here just enjoying his company, before I make the trip home on Saturday.
