Mondays Musical Gem. Not long after finishing music college I did probably the only audition Ive ever done; it was for a show called The Official Tribute To The Blues Brothers. I ended up be involved with the show for the next 15 years, first of all as trumpet player then becoming musical director from my 2nd tour onwards. I also did some tours on drums, a couple of short stints on keyboards and one memorable Friday matinée in Hull on bass...! During my time with the show I really got into the history and ethos of the Blues Brothers; the origins of the characters, the albums (and there are many), the songs. I found it (and still find it) fascinating. And, being part of the creative team, I had a say in what new songs should go in. One song which I always wanted to include, but could never find an appropriate slot for (apart from a 20 second link between songs), was this song off the first Blues Brothers album, A Briefcase Full Of Blues. Now, most people only really know the Blues Brothers film but theres so much more. This first album is brilliant - John Belushi proves that being a great singer doesnt necessarily mean having a great voice, Dan Aykroyd is a more than competent blues harp player and the band has got to be one of the finest ever assembled. Particularly Steve Jordan on drums who, at the time of recording, was only 21. But also, on this track, Steve Croppers run-down the bar before the bass enters at the beginning is just the best country playing and shows hes not just a riff guitarist. No matter what happens to the journey of music in the future, there will still be recordings like this. And, by the way, I could still probably play the show from top to bottom even now without thinking about it, its that engrained in my musical being! https://youtube/watch?v=tjKI7Q-yb-c
