“Moonlight at Palolem” It brought along few shredded beams of light From uncorked provinces Bottled in little pitchers, From the rice fields of old villages, and turmeric heaps Fragments of night followed it In surreal steps, Over stunted palm trees and bent coconut torsos To where I had stretched my thighs. The un-bodied night clung to my spine’s contours Limbs twisted in a coccygeal swirl, Mellowing gulf waves in guiltless abandon, They hanged from sky upon my eyes like pre-pubescent stars And I thought to myself, was i alone or wasn’t I ? At midnight, it spoke of a little boat Restless waves wrapped in silver mayhem, slipping off its mast A father giving away his shadows to his son Salt of his sweat saltier than seas Red of his blood bloodier than dreams They crossed few islands together Had bonfire in unnamed beaches They heard a fisherman ghost’s thin whispers, And a mermaid in despair, They sailed till unkind edges of silence began to show And came back to where I had stretched my arms. Their voyage broke into lullabies, midnight breeze And rekindled sadness somewhere in my inside The sea danced like a nymph who devoured her own youth In a faint silver moonlight And I thought to myself, was I sad Or wasn’t i? Moonlight at Palolem grew thinner than laughter Few hours before the dawn, My feet half buried in warmth of sand Toes hiding into their soft bellies, Burrowing through the baffling naval of sea bed Looking for crab holes for memories, For the dreams of villages and a small boat, For fisherman’s whispers and mermaid’s cries Before I gathered my stretched arms and thighs, Gathered my senses to rise, And all this while, I thought to myself – was I still alive Or wasn’t i? Till the edge of familiar worlds arrived I slept on sand like sleeping over mother’s breasts under its invigorating veil Was I dreaming Or wasn’t i? About grasping salmons, moonlight and four sighs altogether, a fistful of life in a lonely riveting moonlit Palolem night !
