Moral support please, not condemnation! By Huan Cheng Guan Friday, March 14, 2014 In a Press statement emailed to the Editor of a news portal, Datuk Huan Cheng Guan wrote: If you were not a char kuay teow expert, would you dare to set up a stall selling that delectable Penang cuisine? Even if you dared, would you be ready to face disgruntled customers who balked at your bland dish minus the zing that comes with that served by famous hawkers? This simple analogy is intended to show how our government never tried to be more than what it is in the MH370 SAR effort. In its attempt to be honest revealing what it knows at that time, contradictions are bound to happen due to unforeseen circumstances of even the manner in which information is interpreted. Temperatures are high and emotions blinding rational thinking. After all, in the history of aviation, such an incident of this magnitude has never ever happened. Hence, Malaysians should realise the limitations faced by our government in such a heartbreaking situation. I do not intend to mollycoddle our authorities. Rather, I urge all concerned citizens to be fairer in their criticisms. Who in our midst has the capacity and expertise to find MH370? If anyone feels he knows or can do better than the respective authorities, that person should stop everything and step forward to help the authorities in practical and tangible terms instead of sitting behind the computer screen and hammering on the keyboard like a master of none! Picture the scene. All quarters are dumbfounded. No one seems to be able to join the dots and the world is watching. On top of that, Malaysians and superiors in the hierarchy of power want answers, right ones. Naturally, in such a high anxiety situation, one would fumble and contradictions would happen. However, that does not mean spectators assume the role of nitpickers and put on a ‘I am better than Thou’ tone in the way they lambast the government or leaders. Our nation has never experienced such a critical situation. Our leaders are responding positively and trying their utmost to cope to the best of their abilities. Commander William Marks, who is spokesperson for the United States Navy Seventh Fleet, praised the Malaysian governments search-and-rescue (SAR) efforts for the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 jetliner by notable mention of our government’s well-organized SAR action plan and the coordination effort. Irresponsible attacks by enemies out to create dissent or to politicise a tragedy must be stopped. This is not a game but a life and death situation. A Bernama statement reported that China has expressed satisfaction with the efforts taken by the Malaysian government so far in the search for a missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight that had Chinese nationals as the most number of passengers. China’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Huang Hukiang, said there might have been some criticisms by the Chinese authorities and relatives of the passengers over what they felt was some delay but this had been clarified to them. Admittedly, the current emergency highlights certain needs in our system but this is no reason to go to town with negativism. Constructive comments and devoted prayers or beneficial activities such as providing counseling or comfort in times of sorry via inspiring messages/notes would go a long way to defuse this already overheated situation. Considering the gravity, complexity, and magnitude of the problem, our government has done quite well. Let us zip up and continue to pray for the best. As for now, the less said, the better. All involved need MORAL support, not condemnation! Put an end to the finger pointing and let us go on bended knees for divine intervention.
