Mordecai stars johnny depp , gwyenth Paltrow , Ewan mcgregor and Paul Bethany. The film is about an eccentric , bumbling, moustached and slightly shady art dealer and millionaire named Charlie Mordecai who is sent by an MI5 spy chief and former school chum (played by Ewan mcgregor ) to track down a stolen Goya painting because they presume its been taken by a known terrorist extremist. While searching for the painting Mordecai navigates dangerous terrorists , Russian thugs and his own leggy wife johanna (Paltrow). Now this movie is quite frustrating because it had so much more potential to be something greater than what it turned out to be. Everyone acting in this movie tries there best to make it work but sadly it just dosent. Its too over the top and too cartoony and above all else for a comedy its rarely ever funny I very rarely laughed maybe I did once or twice but if thats the case than the comedy failed. The script is rather bland and terrible while the plot is convoluted and way too scatterbrained meaning that the movie is hard to follow and even harder to care about. Johnny deep plays another weird and eccentric character cause its not like he hasnt been playing those kinda roles constantly for the last 10 years oh no wait he has and its just gotten soo old like its clear the guy has acting chops its just he wont show them cause there too far hidden under all the makeup for all the mad crazy people hes played and they all just seem to be the same I love him as jack sparrow but he has to try something new but he probably wont cause hes made it filthy rich doing this stuff so why should he care he owns his own freackin island. Anyway now to give him credit this is by no means his worst performance at times he is worth a chuckle or too but he just seems to be trying to hard like as if nobody behind the camera will bother to say ok johnny please could you tone it down a littl like nobody restrains him and that means a lot of the time his gags are just cringe worthy. We see him trying to emulate the likes of peter sellers in the original pink panther or the likes of great British comedy legends like David Niven but he just comes off as a weird kinda parody of them and not in a good way in a way that makes you think wow this guy is just an idiot but not the likeable kind. Now Ive had my reservations about gwyenth Paltrow in the past but here boy is unlikeable I mean really I couldnt stand her charecter she was just soo vindictive it made me not care about her or her relationship with her husband. What nearly just saved the film was a surprisingly great performance by Paul bettany as mordecais bodyguard and man servant jock a big burly brute who spends half the movie screwing any woman he can find and the other half saving his bosses bacon so much that it makes the audience say for god sakes why are you still working for this dope how much Is he paying you so that you can put up with all this crap. But anyways so he was quite good and about 90% of the laughs came from him whereas the rest of the cast struggle to stand out while jeff goldblum is sinfully wasted in a small role a big no no in my book since I love jeff goldblum and while everyone tries this movie is just about watchable . So overall a very poor unfunny slapstick caper that could have so much better yet is still watchable if it was on Netflix or cable one evening but not really worth the cost of a trip to see in cinemas I give Mordecai a 5 out of 10
