More dialogue from real life, as closely as I can remember it: Person in Subway: Thats £3.49, or just three quid if you make it a meal. Me: What makes it a meal? A drink? Person: Yes. Me: Anything else? A cookie? Person: No. Just a drink. Me: OK. Ill have a tea please. Person: Oh, no; just a cup drink (Since when was tea not a cup drink?) Me: What; a fizzy drink? Person: Or a bottle of water. Me: Ill have a bottle of water then. (Im not being healthy, by the way; I just dont like fizzy drinks.) Person: Thats 30p extra. Me: Oh. Just a cup drink then. Do I have to actually take the drink? Person: Yes. Me: But I dont really want it. Person: You have to have a drink to make it a meal. Me: But cant I just pay for the meal and not bother taking the drink? Person: No. Me: So I have to buy it and throw it away or pay 50p extra? Person: Yes. Me: Um, OK. Person: Three pounds please. The cups are in front of the till here. You can fill them from the machine over there. Being English, I took the cup. Being by nature a risk-taker, iconoclast and revolutionary, I didnt go over and fill it from the machine. Nobody tackled me to the ground as I left.
