More evidence of USA’s incredibly dysfunctional government: While US agriculture policy subsidizes environmentally unfriendly megafarms that use economies of scale to crush small family farmers, Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) is tied in to the agriculture bill in a bid to ensure its passage. But due to the current climate, food assistance to hungry people through SNAP is being cut even though it is a bare bones safety net for millions of elders, children, and people with disabilities. (According to the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), eighty-three percent of all SNAP benefits go to households with a child, senior, or disabled person. Another 83 percent of SNAP households have gross income at or below 100 percent of the poverty guideline – that’s $19,530 for a family of three in 2013.) commondreams.org/headline/2013/06/06-3
