More from my book... beginning the segment on Leadership that introduces my Mindmap/Infographic: I understand that this discussion is complicated for those who have not specifically studied leadership and have not been exposed to the multiple theories that are debated amongst. For this, I would like to introduce a state of mind to consider. Allow me to offer a short introduction that will ease your mind into understanding the study of leadership and its significance before I begin to navigate my leadership mind map with you. Study of Leadership The history of leadership dates to the beginning of the history of human civilization. The concept of leadership was reflected on in ancient Egypt which dates to 2300 BC. There are numerous examples on the reflection of leadership in Greek literature. Every country and province and each of the world religions has their own history of different leaders. Therefore, the most common initial introductions to the study of leadership is found in grammar school history classes regarding leaders of war and leaders of countries. Leadership is also discussed in children’s religious studies. Many public schools are beginning to offer courses on world religions that necessarily include the impact of key religious leaders. Military organizations were one of the first to study leadership to apply toward the practice of strategy. Today leadership is studied in every academic discipline, as leaders have influenced each one. Great writers, artists, philosophers, scientists, historians, and athletes are considered leaders and role models for best practices and students of each of these disciplines look to studying the forefathers and leaders that motivate their interest. Throughout the 20th century, the study of leadership became formalized in research studies to identify disposition, strategy, and effectiveness with followers. Through these studies, specific types of leadership were identified and distinguished from one another through theoretical explanations. There are numerous different leadership theories and more continue to surface. There is also an immense amount of approaches to examine leadership and the theories.
