More on MLA SalariesLFrom: mlalienation@gmail The MLA Director was paid $291,615.00 and ten executives received over $125,000.00 in compensation in 2011. (The director pay increase from 2010 to 2011 was $30,000.00 or 11%; if the position received the same raises since 2011, the 2013 MLA Executive Directory salary was over $358,000.00. See attached image.) While the MLA acknowledges that hierarchical wages threaten the integrity of the profession and instructional programs (MLA Executive Council, February 1994), the associations own exorbitant salaries are a serious detriment to the profession. This petition calls for the MLA to cap executive salaries at a 4:1 ratio of the average non-tenure-track salary ($96,000.00; or 4 x $24,000.00) and commit to allocating the remainder monies to support adjuncts and the unemployed. As a non-profit organization, the MLA membership dues, conference registration, and other fees, should contribute to the disciplines and those scholars most affected by the crisis; they should not produce unreasonable wealth for the executives.
