More than 2,000,000 people worldwide have End Stage Renal Disease - TopicsExpress

More than 2,000,000 people worldwide have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis, and about 500,000 of them live inthe US. Dialysis patients experience a low quality of life, and their mortality rate is unacceptably high. ESRD patients are tied to large washing machine sized dialysis appliances for many hours, subjected to draconian diet restrictions, and end up going to hospitals all too frequently. Dialysis patients also must consume large amounts of pills, and many of them are too frail, fatigued or ill to care for themselves or their families, much less hold a job. The cost of keeping dialysis patients alive is staggering. Creativity and innovation are badly needed here and now. A Wearable Artificial Kidney holds the promise to alleviate the plight and suffering of dialysis patients. It is also hoped that the Wearable Artificial Kidney will not only give dialysis patients a better life, but will also reduce the mortality and cost of being on dialysis.
