More than 200+ folks went Back to the Box on Saturday night! In spite of heavy rain most of the day, the skies cleared, and Music Box fans arrived at Bobcat Field on the campus of Houghton Lake Community Schools. Some just listened to the original Music Box playlist (late 1940s-1960s) and reminisced, but many danced the Stroll and the Social and lots of slow dances just like we did so many years ago. The Music Box was an outdoor dance pavilion that drew teens from several neighboring states to Prudenville and Houghton Lake for nearly 35 years. Gone now (the Box closed in 2001), Back to the Box was part of the Houghton Lake Public Librarys 50th anniversary celebration of public library service - a unique opportunity to celebrate the fun, music and memories for one special night. Back to the Box was also a great example of folks coming together for the community good. THANKS, to everyone who assisted in any way. Following are names of some of those gracious, hard-working folks: Dancers enjoyed coca cola in the same small bottles that were served at the Music Box thanks to a donation from the Coca Cola Co. Tasty coney dogs from Joes Coney Island were on the menu. Joe & Penelope not only provided a huge discount but they also cooked and delivered the dogs and sauce right to the site. Camping World and individual donors contributed to covering the rest of the cost of refreshments and prizes! Coach Keith Thoms and his crew representing the Houghton Lake Cross Country team coordinated the concession stand. Brent Cryderman (Houghton Lake High School) and his great facility staff helped us with a perfect location that included the concession stand, convenient restrooms, lots of parking, and even a flat large area to accommodate a wooden dance floor. Mike Rounds, MiSpot (a local company that provides 4GLTE highspeed wireless Internet), delivered a MiSpot router for use during the evening. Roscommons Knights of Columbus (Our Prince of Peace #6593) allowed us to use their wooden dance floor. Hackers Yamaha brought it to the site. Wilbert Hines , #1 banner hanger and lifter of all things heavy, loaded and returned the floor. Mark Barnhart lent his Music Box memorabilia for the library display and Jim Sulllivan provided a copy of a painting he did for the Music Box owners, Lee and Shirley Kelly. The Music Box Historical Society [musicboxhs.wordpress/tag/houghton-lake/] sanctioned the event. Clark Harder, the guy with the great radio voice, presented the musical program (to describe him as a dj would not be adequate). Super volunteers included Kim Frazho, Pat Gross, and Cathy Bonacorsi who framed photos for the librarys exhibit. At the event, Sharon Andre, Lisa Wisniewski, Annette Patalon, Elaine DeSmith, and Tony & Sue Jurewicz welcomed folks and got them registered for prizes. Joe Fortin and the two Daves drove their classic cars and added to the Boxs atmosphere. Author/historian Deborah Gouin (her new book is Houghton Lake) provided a book talk along with the history and use of her many photos throughout the project. A special thank you to library staff who worked on so many programs during this celebration of our milestone. Kudos to newspaper family at the Houghton Lake Resorter and to staff from the Voice for continued coverage of all things library!
