More than 700 Civil War reenactors gathered at Fort Fisher on Saturday, 17 Jan. to mark the 150th Anniversary of the second Battle of Fort Fisher. The site, located just offshore of Kure Beach, was almost lost to erosion three decades ago. A grassroots effort between the State of North Carolina and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recognized the historic and cultural value of the fort which sparked efforts to reduce further erosion. According to retired Wilmington District civil engineer Bill Dennis, the solution was a rock reventment that was strategically built near the main part of the fort. The year the fort was completed we had hurricanes Fran and Bertha back to back, said Dennis. We were fortunate to have completed the project because it would have meant a significant loss of the fort, especially from Fran which made a direct hit in the area. ow.ly/HDfCH (USACE photos by Hank Heusinkveld) For more information about the Battle of Fort Fisher please go to the following site; civilwar.org/battlefields/fort-fisher.html
