More than anything Im hoping that the Presidents proposal will start conversations about higher education and its cost. The plan unfortunately will not help the poorest Californians who already get free tuition with the Board of Governors Fee Waiver. As someone who has been on the BOG my hurdle was not tuition, but books, transportation, and well life. The same issues that prevent many students from attending full-time and stretch out their community college career beyond the 2 years we all wish to be out by. Student success initiatives and support programs make the difference and his program offers scant details about any investment in those areas. And as more funds get pushed towards tuition, well see even less going towards student success programs or maybe not... Any additional funds will most definitely be tied to reforms that will undoubtedly change the direction of what community college in California has been known to be about and well see a return to the debates surrounding the Student Success Act. Im all about #FreeCommunityCollege, its something Ive advocated for, but Ill be the first to say sometimes what we wish for doesnt solve the problem Im curious to see what some of my smarter friends think.
