More than once I have seen an illustration, a boy sits in a classroom with his feet up on his desk while all the other children stand with their hands on their hearts. With in the illustration you can see the U.S. flag and the teacher of the classroom stands next to a man in a military uniform seated in a wheelchair. The teacher is speaking, ”Kevin, it’s your right not to stand for the pledge…” next bubble, “but let me introduce you to someone who can’t stand because he was defending that right.” Something about the image seemed off to me and as I sat there pondering the idea of the image I asked myself the question, what was the last war fought to defend my rights, well, interestingly, but not surprisingly, I would have to say it was the American Revolution. My rights as a U.S. citizen were not threatened by the Afghans nor by the Iraqis. The war on terror isn’t protecting my rights, no terrorist organization is going to take control of any part of the U.S. and alter our rights. Our rights were were never threatened by the Vietnamese or the Koreans, even with World Wars I and II no other country could have occupied and restricted the rights of the citizens of the U.S. If I were African-American instead of European-American I could say that it was the civil war, but I am not and so as a Caucasian male I can confidently say that the only war defending my rights as a U.S. citizen is the same war that made the United States a country and there is no man alive today that fought in that war. Unfortunately, over the past several decades it has been our own government restricting our rights, not a foreign enemy.
