More than two years after the uprising of 2011, armed conflict - TopicsExpress

More than two years after the uprising of 2011, armed conflict still rages in Syria, and the numbers of those severely affected are boggling. Inside Syria, nearly seven million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, and two million have taken refuge in neighboring Egypt, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. Thousands are still flowing across the borders each day; more than half of them are children. Over two and a half years of violent conflict, more than 100,000 people have been killed. Two million Syrians are now refugees, and more than 6.8 million urgently need humanitarian aid. Very soon, President Obama will ask Congress to authorize military authorization in Syria. There is a clear risk that this proposed intervention will make matters worse, not better, for the ordinary men, women and children of Syria. Instead, the United States should urgently pursue a peaceful, political solution to end the bloodshed in Syria once and for all. Urge your Congressional representative to vote NO on authorizing military intervention in Syria and instead push for peace talks. oxfamamerica.org/syria
