Morning peeps. A Better Understanding About Broadcasting Rights. Baca jangan tak baca. Individual or Collective ? Yang mana satu idaman kalbu? What does it mean to have an individual bargaining system between teams? In an individual bargaining system, the team manages their own TV rights. They sell them individually to a TV broadcaster, which pays a quantity in order to freely broadcast the signal of the teams games. This signal is sold to different TV channels, which will finally show the match to final consumers. The TV market structure, however, is unrestricted; it can be competitive or monopolistic. In the case of monopolistic TV market, it is clear teams will sell the rights to a unique broadcaster. In the case of the competitive TV market, say with two broadcasters, each broadcaster will own at least one team of the league. This means that when two teams whose rights are owned by different broadcasters play each other, the broadcaster will have to reach an agreement on which of the two will broadcast the signal. In Spain, the match must by law be broadcasted by the TV broadcaster that own the rights of the team playing at home. A collective bargaining scheme (like in Msia) has a simpler structure. The team gathers together (Sadly not a practice here in Msia) and represented by a supra-entity (Which normally the football league it self in our case FAM) bargain with the TV broadcaster. The revenue obtained are shared accordingly to a ex-ante predetermined rule which normaly tries to promote both competition and equality between teams.(ln our case kita kena Skodeng) For example clubs in England receive broadcast income in tne following way: 50% is shared equally between the 20 clubs, 25% is paid in Facility Fees each time the club matches are shown on TV in the UK(With each club guaranteed a minimum of 10 Facility Fees) and the final 25% is paid in Merit Payments which are dependent on clubs final position in the League Table. Apart from England, this redistribution is more or less similar across the different euro competitions in Germany, Italy, France and Euro Champs League. In Malaysia? Macam sama tapi jauh panggang dari api. Revenues in football leagues in a theoretical framework relying in two different dimension : 1- The way revenues are bargained between TV and clubs ; they can centralized by a single part representing all the teams or it can done individually by each team. In our case FAM has been bullshiting us with regards to broadcasting revenue distributions year in year out and with that in mind, we hope that we can manage our broadcasting rights individually. 2.The degree of competition in the TV market, which will have an impact on final and team revenues. Later kalau otak segar dan free, I will also take into special consideration how merchandising (an important part of the football clubs revenue) can affect teams budget, considering that merchandising and TV matches are complementary goods in the consumer demand.
