Morning you beautiful Monkies. Its the first day of the weekend, and we have some rather severe weather expected today (Saturday). Things will start off calm enough and for many of us there will be some brightness, but its not going to last, unfortunately. A very deep area of low pressure will continue to fill (weaken) as it approaches England, Scotland and Wales during late morning. The concern will be the tight pressure gradient to the South of the centre of the low, this will be most intense across Northern England, North Wales and the North Midlands between 15:00 and 21:00, peaking around early evening approx 19:00. Across these more Northern areas, inland gales will develop with gusts of 50mph to 60mph expected, locally 70mph across exposed higher ground and around coastline. Severe gales will develop across coastlines with gusts up-to 60mph to 74mph possible. Very strong winds will also develop inland across the midlands, Wales and South West England with localized Gales developing inland here too and severe gales locally around coasts, becoming especially severe across South Wales coastline. Gusts of 45mph to 55mph are expected with gusts up-to 70mph possible across Mumbles. Elsewhere across Southern England and the South East winds will be strong to locally very strong inland with gales around exposed coastline. Gusts of up-to 50mph are possible. Accompanied by the very strong wind which will bring the risk of some minor structural damage and uprooting of trees, showers will also become much more intense through the afternoon. The heaviest showers will be across the South Coast and especially Wales and Western/North Western coasts with the risk of hail and thunder. Accompanied by these locally intense showers will be enhanced squally gusts of wind which have the potential to bring localised damage. Needless to say following on from recent heavy rainfall and ground already very saturated, rivers and water table high, further flooding is extremely likely and is a major cause for concern. It wont just be the wind and rain causing concern today, a combination of very low air pressure, seasonal very high tides eg. The Severn Bore, and very strong SW/W winds, significant upwelling is expected and Coastal flooding will be a massive concern. The Environment agency have already issued numerous Severe Flood Warnings, there highest alert level for much of South West England/Midlands and along the entire West Coast of the United Kingdom. It really is going to go down hill quite rapidly as we move into the afternoon, peaking towards evening/early night, we advise you to take extra care and only travel if necessary, especially if youre in the North and West. Batten down the hatches! Tomorrow (Sunday) looks better, but more wet weather is expected Monday and we have more very wet and potentially stormy weather for Tues/Wed period. Take care today.
