Most Common Mistakes Made when Purchasing a Betta *Not planning before buying. When you decide it is time to add a fish, any fish really, to your household, you need to do two things first; research the fish you want, and set up the tank so it can cycle. Most people out there wander through the fish isle of a store, see bettas, and think ooh, thats pretty! Lets get him! or even, Well, well come back later to pick out a tank and a betta when we dont have an appointment to go to. *Buying two male bettas, and housing them together, either because they do not know they fight, or for fun. If they are unaware they are not very good roomies, then they a. need to do research before making decisions, and b. make sure the clerk knows at least SOMETHING about what they are selling (and has common sense). If they are just watching them fight for entertainment; slap them. *Buying the wrong decorations to put in the tank. (Im purposely skipping b!tching about tank sizes lol) Not a lot of people stop and see if the plastic plants they are buying are going to rip the bettas fins, or if that gorgeous cave might damage/seriously injure their new aquatic buddy. The fact is, if a decoration has any points on it that are rough, pointed, or sharp in any way, it can potentially hurt a betta, especially ones with more delicate fins such as crowntails, it should not be put in the same tank as a betta. Instead, silk plants, smooth caves (terra cotta plant pots work great), and smooth/soft decorations should be used. Now, some hardy little buggers can stand some plastic plants, but you have to watch for tears. At first sign, remove the plant and replace with silk. Thanks for reading! Til next time! -Iggy
