Most Detested of Permissible Things Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When all attempts at reconciliation fail, marriage can be dissolved by having recourse to Talaq, which is ‘Abghaz-ul-Mubahat’ (the most detestable of the permissible things).” [Abu Dawud] Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The most detestable of lawful things near Allah is Talaq.” [Ibn Majah] Though permissible, divorce (Talaq) is the most hateful of lawful deeds in the sight of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). This is because the family is a sacred institution in Islam and Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) hates to see it broken apart and its members exposed to the ravages of society. However, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) made divorce permissible to save Muslims from being stuck life-long in an unworkable situation. Islam takes the middle course, thus, it avoids the extremes of never allowing divorce (as in Hinduism or Catholicism) and having little regard for the institution of marriage (as can be seen in Western civilization today from which abused individuals abound).
