Most Memorable Moments (from September 2014): I had been watching - TopicsExpress

Most Memorable Moments (from September 2014): I had been watching my resident female Ruby-throated Hummingbird since last spring but always at quite a distance. One day when migration time was approaching and her male offspring had already departed, I thought she looked a little different and as I looking through the lens something seemed to swoop into frame and hit her! I looked around and she was gone so I ran down to the feeder to see if she was on the ground. Suddenly two hummingbirds were were buzzing around my head in a fierce fight! I froze and eventually she just hovered a few feet from me, protecting her feeder. After that, she seemed to have no problem being close to me. So I got the idea to wrap a florist flower tube with red electrical tape and fill it with sugar water. I stuck it on the feeder and by the evening she was using it. The next day I decided to try holding it and she came to it right away! I wish my arms had been longer because it was a bit difficult trying to take photos while I held it! The next day she rested on my finger and the sensation was incredible! Best-5-seconds-ever! :-) Its kind of funny that my two most memorable moments are at opposite ends of the bird spectrum: largest (Sandhill Cranes) and smallest (Ruby-throated Hummingbird).
