Most meetings fail. Only 40% -- less than half, in other words -- of global CEOs and senior executives say their meetings meet their intended objectives. Whats missing? Why such a low success rate? (Or, put another way, why such a high rate of failure?) The answer, at least in part, is because all of us, even CEOs and very very senior people tend to downright avoid or somehow soften the delivery of difficult topics or themes that might cause conflict. And you know what? Those are the times where directness is most needed! Okay. Wait. We need to say something first. its not emotionally draining to announce holiday bonuses for all staff, right? BUT EVEN THEN you want to make sure you give the WHY and you frame the presentation: this is happening because we, collectively, did well this year and we, collectively are going to share in the very positive result. Wouldnt it also be great to announce that a portion of the profit was going to a local food bank or literacy program? Think it through. But, meanwhile, back to the tough stuff. Here are three things to do with a difficult topic: 1. Know why you are calling the meeting and know what you hope to achieve by doing this presentation. Tell people that upfront. 2. Dont buy in to that theory that says you always need good news to balance the bad. If its bad news, just say so. 3. Ask people if they understand. Allow double the amount of time for Q&A. If youre standing on a stage when you present, come down into the audience. Be on the same level. Create a safe environment for asking questions. And, whatever you do, dont get defensive!
