Though this will be redundant for you guys and gals, I want to plant in our rebel garden the video that Ilkka shared on a thread dealing with Free Will. In it, Dan Dennett of Tufts U. makes the case for combining environmental and biological variables that constrain choice (a form of determinism) with moral responsibility which leads to punishment for violating societal rules. And conversely when the variables overpower the capacity to act morally, culpability is reduced as is strict punishment.
