Most of my good friends know that, in addition to building my real estate business, Im a passionate science enthusiast, even though I decided not to finish my Ph.D. program. If you see enough of my posts, thatll be pretty obvious. Yet again today, someone hit me with the just a theory argument regarding evolution. It seriously troubles me that, as a proud American, there are still tens of millions of people in this country who deny evolution as fact. Over 99% of scientists completely embrace the theory of evolution (and we lag behind the rest of the civilized world in this matter). What better group of people to turn to for scientific answers than.....scientists? And to that point, that classic response of evolution being just a theory is a great way to publicly state that you dont know what the word theory means when used scientifically. It does not mean a guess or hunch. A scientific theory is the highest form of scientific explanation there is -- it doesnt get any better than a theory. A law describes, a theory explains. So knowing this, stating that evolution is just a theory couldnt more of a thumbs up FOR evolution, even though people usually intend the opposite. And thats the great thing about a theory. It doesnt require anyone to believe it to be true. The theory of evolution passes all the required tests of a theory with flying colors. Denying evolution is the same as denying that a molecule of water is made of up two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Yes, its the same thing. Legitimate scientists no longer debate whether evolution is true or not. That debate has been put to rest for decades and decades now, despite what deniers would have us believe. That is no longer the stage of current scientific inquiry and hasnt been for a long time. Somewhere in this country today a child is being taught that evolution is just a theory. As a soon to be father, I seriously worry about Americas place in the world when generation after generation of children graduate from school intellectually handicapped, denied the basic toolset required to succeed in the world that waits for them, especially the increasingly important STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
