Most of us are saddened and often times discouraged when we see folks coming in to the shelter to surrender their animals, especially when our kennels are so full. Some shelters in the country have allowed groups to come to their doors to offer pet surrendering counseling, even before the pet owners make it inside with their pets. Some folks feel they must give up their beloved pet because they cant afford to feed or take care of vet bills. Some folks are moving or must leave town for an extended period of time and have no options for housing their pets during their transition. There are some resources out there to assist these folks and many of them are just not aware of the help that they may be able to get. Our own volunteer, Jim Madsen, has brought these programs to the attention of shelter management and this is something that we are looking at. We would not be utilizing an outside group, however. We are interested in finding out if there is volunteer interest in hosting a table in the front of our shelters to offer additional information to folks on resources that might be available to them. We are in the very beginning stages of our research, but just want to get an idea of anyone who would be interested in helping in this manner. Those interested would have to be informative, non-judgemental and understanding. We would supply all the training and all the information needed to help these folks. Let me know if you might be interested in this and I wil be keeping you all posted on our progress. Thank you, Debra Wood-LaFave Volunteer Coordinator Office: 602-506-8133
