Mother Earth: The seers of ancient Mexico perceived that humans are connected to everything in the universe, but for various reasons individuals can feel isolated from everything else. Don Juan told Carlos Castaneda that the education imparted to him could be defined as the process of cleaning the connection with Spirit, with the Universe. Often when we have spent too much time working between cement walls or walking on pavement, it can shift our experience to take a moment in the shade of a tree or find a little patch of grass or sand, take off our shoes and feel the earth with our feet. I once walked down a street, preoccupied by abstract thoughts, when a scent unleashed childhood memories--I looked to find the source of the aroma, and behind a high wall appeared a fig tree. I crossed the street and asked the policeman who was there if he would let me climb the wall to take some fruit. I think such an unusual idea amazed him, but he agreed to let me do it. I enjoyed the sweet figs and for the first time in my life really felt the depth of Mother Earths gifts. If cleaning our link with Spirit helps us to know our relationship with all that exists, a first step could well be to feel our connection with Mother Earth. We can be thankful for each fruit, each glass of fresh water that makes it possible for us to stay one more day in this world.
