Mother Nature No Match for the Hamilton County Speedway By: Ryan Bergeson Rain continued to fall in the central part of the State of Iowa threatening yet another night of racing at the Hamilton County Speedway. Heavy rains fell to the ground on Friday night and again on Saturday afternoon causing speedway officials to question the prospects of racing this Saturday night. The Hamilton County Fair Board showed determination and decided that Mother Nature would not win the battle on Saturday. Work on the facilities continued throughout the afternoon and in the end, the mud in the pit area was more than tolerated as the race track was in outstanding shape and provided great racing action for the diehard racing enthusiasts in the grandstand. The night was officially started with Coty Albers as the man on point in the Sportmod feature. Albers led the first five laps until being over taken by Matt Lettowon lap number six. Lettow was first to the checkered flag followed by Coty Albers, Bob Sutherland, and Rocky Caudle. The Modified feature was up next with a familiar face out on top. Ryan Ruter snared the lead from Devin Havlik on the third lap and charged to the checkered flag. Dustin Smith worked through the field of cars to finish second as Mark Elliott eventually cruised to the third position. Scott Olson rounded out the top four positions. Ruter captured his third feature win of the season. The Late Model division exploded onto the speedway with Jason Hahne in control. Hahne led all twenty laps and held off Ryan Griffith and Darrell DeFrance to the finish line. Hahne took advantage of the outside pole position and grabbed the checkers for the first time in 2013. Griffith, DeFrance, and Jeremy Grady finished in the top four. The Stock Cars feature was led by Jason Vansickel in the early stages as he worked the bottom racing groove to hold off John Campbell. Vansickel eventually lost the spot and control and looped the machine on the bottom of the speedway. Campbell took full advantage and led the final circuits to pick up his first feature win of the season. Steve Meyer had another consistent outing by finishing second followed by Travis Prochaska, and Derek Green. The Sport Compact feature was led early by Danny Sassman Jr. until he was passed by Dustin Haggard. Adam Strunk moved to the outside of Haggard to take the lead in turn two and the two cars made contact. Josh Cleghorn moved to the inside of both drivers and took the top spot away. Cleghorn paced the field the final two laps and picked up the feature win. The final race of the night was dominated early by Ty Griffith. Griffith made quick work of the front two rows and raced to the lead on the first lap. Griffith hooked the right rear on the top rail and looked to have things sewn up until a caution bunched the field. Griffith and Devin Smith dazzled the fans with racing wheel to wheel for several laps until another caution halted the competition. Griffith later experienced over heating issues which turned over the reins to Devin Smith. Smith grabbed the lead and did not look back on the way to the feature win. Randy Embrey, Myles Michehl, and Cody Nielson finished in the top four positions. The good guys prevailed this time over Mother Nature and the show turned out gold for everyone involved. The Hamilton County Fair Board, Al Uhrhammer, and Mike Vangenderen deserve an enormous thank you for making the show happen this Saturday night. The Historic Speed Plant in Webster City will spring into action again next Saturday night with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing to follow.
