Mother, Tammy Shook had this to say about BBBS NWA and their experience: By having a Big Brother, Tyler has become more confident in himself. Ty plays soccer and his current Big, Stephen, played the same position when he was younger. With this in common, Ty feels like he can “talk soccer” with him. Stephen has come to one of Ty’s games and asked for the schedule for the rest of the season, so he can make more games! When we 1st got on the waiting list for Tyler to get a Big Brother, we didn’t realize the time it would take to get him matched, due to the fact that it seems fewer males than females actually volunteer for BBBS. After Ty got the feel of what BBBS was all about, when he had to wait on a 2nd Big, he asked specifically, if he could wait for a “brown” Big Brother, so he would be more like him! Nothing at all against his 1st Big, because he was awesome, but Ty just needed that extra “connection” that would come with a Big who was more like him. Tyler has been a different kid since having been in the BBBS program. He always looks forward to the next outing, no matter what it is they have planned. Also, he is reaching the age (he is 10 ½ now) that he will be needing that male influence to help him through some of the stages of turning into an awesome young man. With Stephen, I have no doubt that Ty will be able to ask him any questions and talk about anything that he comes up with, that he just doesn’t feel comfortable talking to Mom!
