Motivation for Commitment SCRIPTURE READING: Daniel 6 KEY VERSE: Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Even though the Persian decree demanded that worship be given only to King Darius, Daniel continued to worship God. He knew that violation of the decree would lead to the lions’ den, yet he refused to compromise his convictions. We all have moments when we feel like Daniel—times when we stand for what we know is right, but we end up feeling as if we have been cast into a den of lions. It happens in our jobs, community ties, families, and even our churches. The thing that separated Daniel was his devotion to God. He was not concerned about what others thought of him. Above everything else, Daniel wanted to live only for God. Nothing could change the upward direction of his worship. When people see your life, do they see Jesus? Daniel’s witness was so strong that it made a lasting impression on the king. From the top of the lions’ den, King Darius shouted down, “Your God whom you constantly serve will Himself deliver you” (Dan. 6:16 NASB). May the words of our Savior motivate us to an even stronger commitment: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:16 NIV). O God, often I feel as if I am in a den of lions, surrounded by hostile people and circumstances. In these times, help me remain faithful in devotion and duty so that You will be glorified.
