Motorcyclist Killed in Downtown Lakeland Crash Mar 15, 2014 By ROBIN WILLIAMS ADAMS / THE LEDGER / LAKELAND | The driver of a motorcycle that had been reported stolen died in a collision with a sport utility vehicle early Saturday in downtown Lakeland, police said. Traffic on South Florida Avenue near Lime Street was detoured nearly five hours this morning as law enforcement officers investigated the two-vehicle crash. A 2004 Suzuki motorcycle, traveling north on Florida Avenue about 2:10 a.m. entered the intersection with Lime Street and collided with a 2009 Jeep Cherokee that was in the intersection, the Lakeland Police Department said. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. That drivers name hasnt yet been released. Police said the driver of the Jeep, Peter J. Nelson of Tampa, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Initial investigation indicates the driver of the motorcycle failed to stop for the red light, police said. The motorcycle was reported stolen out of Kissimmee on Dec. 20, according to police.
