Motorists warned of road closures and clearways for Sydney Running Festival Police are warning motorists and residents to expect significant delays due to major road closures for this weekend’s Sydney Running Festival. More than 32,000 people are expected to take part in four separate events on Sunday (22 September 2013), including a half and full marathon, a family fun run and a bridge run. All events start at Bradfield Park at Milsons Point, with the half and full marathons finishing at the Sydney Opera House and the Family Fun Run and Bridge Run finishing at the Sydney Conservatory. The first event, the Half Marathon, commences at 6.15am; the second, the Sydney Marathon, at 7.20am; the third, the Family Fun Run, at 7.50am; and the fourth event, the Bridge Run, at 9am. Major road closures include the Sydney Harbour Bridge, including approaches, Bradfield Highway and Cahill Expressway; Bridge Street, College Street, Hickson Road, Macquarie Street, Oxford Street, Alfred Street South, Lavender Street, Anzac Parade, Cleveland Street, Flinders Street, Lang Road and Moore Park Road. The Sydney Harbour Bridge and roads in North Sydney, the Sydney CBD, Surry Hills and Pyrmont will start closing from 4am, while roads in Moore Park will close from 6am. Roads will be progressively re-opened once the course is cleared, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Cahill Expressway expected to re-open by 11am and all other roads expected to be re-opened by 1.30pm. Special event clearways will also be in place between 1am and 1.30pm. Motorists are advised to check signs before parking as vehicles left in special event clearways will be towed and fines apply. This includes vehicles with local parking permits. Operation Waldon, a high-visibility policing strategy, will be conducted during the event, ensuring the safety and security of participants and spectators. Police from Central Metropolitan Region, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Mounted Unit, Police Transport Command, Dog Unit, Bicycle Unit and PolAir will be involved in the operation, which will take place at the start and finish areas and along the race route. Operation Waldon Commander, Superintendent Allan Sicard, said police are working with the event organisers and other agencies to ensure the safety of participants and spectators prior to, during and after the event. “The Sydney Running Festival features one of the most scenic courses in the world, taking in iconic locations including the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, and we are working to minimise the impact of the event on the community,” Supt Sicard said. “There will be major road closures during the event and we are working with the Transport Management Centre (TMC) to implement the closures and manage traffic on the day. “We strongly urge motorists and residents to plan their trips in advance, preferably on public transport, and expect delays,” Supt Sicard said. There will be significant changes to bus services between the CBD and Eastern Suburbs while road closures are in place. For details and to plan your trip go to 131500.au or call 131 500. In addition, there are buses replacing train services on the East Hills, Airport and Southern Highlands Lines due to trackwork. For more information visit: sydneytrains.info/.
