Motown 200 36. It Takes Two – Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston (1967) I guess this is a bit odd as I’ve been eulogising over the brilliance of Marvin Gaye’s performing relationship with Tammi Terrell, and yet here, placed higher than any of their’s is this! But, while overall the Gaye/Terrell combination produced the best results, as an individual record this takes some beating. The song was written by Weston’s husband Mickey Stevenson and Sylvia Moy especially for Marvin and Kim and it worked brilliantly. Weston was later to speak highly of Gaye, saying that he encouraged her with tips and advice, added intonations and ad libs into the song. In her words “the genius shone out of him”. By the time this was released Weston had already left Motown though, and she later regretted that that move took away the chance for her to continue the partnership. It got to #14 on the US chart and #5 in the UK. It was also a huge hit in Ireland, Holland, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. As much as I can’t stand Tina Turner her collaboration with Rod Stewart of this was pretty damn good. Well he was anyway.
