Mountain House Road between CA 128 and Hopland is an authentic two-lane drive. The curvaceous road crawls over two ridges, dipping down in between to cross Cummiskey Creek. The narrow road is pure primitive mountain pass engineering, with few cut or fill sections. At the south end it maintains an 18’-5” road width, with mountain-side lanes tapering to a treacherous 6’-5” at curves. Over the first ridge, drainage structures are simply corrugated pipes, with long, metal slides attached to the downflow ends. Between the ridges, over Cummiskey Creek, is a 1913 two-span concrete deck-girder bridge. The road widens as it flattens nearing Hopland. Here are found old concrete culverts showing 6 ¾” formwork. Some — like the one pictured — have been widened with 6-long plywood-formed extensions. A series of concrete culverts with white, wood railing, poke up along the road just before reaching town. With its steepness and curves, the Mountain House section of RH/101 was bypassed in 1934.
